Can You Sell a Car You Still Owe Money On?

June 24, 2026

Yes, you can sell a car you still owe money on — but the loan has to be paid off as part of the sale. That's because your lender holds the title (the lien) until the balance is cleared, and the title is what transfers ownership to the buyer.

Start by getting your payoff amount. Call your lender and ask for the exact payoff figure, which is slightly different from your current balance. That number is what must be cleared for the lender to release the title.

If the car is worth more than you owe, you have positive equity: the buyer's payment goes to the lender first, and you keep the difference. Many buyers can pay the lender directly and hand you the rest.

If you owe more than the car is worth, you're underwater. You'll need to cover the gap to clear the loan before the title can transfer. This is common on newer financed cars and on vehicles that have been wrecked.

What if it's a financed junk or wrecked car? It still has to be paid off, but a cash buyer can often coordinate the payoff directly with your lender so the lien is cleared and the title released. The key is to tell the buyer up front that there's a loan on the vehicle.

Have your lender's payoff information, your photo ID, and the loan account details ready, and don't cancel insurance until the sale and payoff are complete. Financed and ready to sell — running or not? Get a quote and we'll walk you through the payoff.
